Impact at Allens

Introduction

We are pleased to share Allens' first Impact Report, covering the 12 months to 30 June 2024. The report outlines our environmental, social and governance targets and commitments, and details our efforts to meet those commitments through a range of programs and activities.

We understand the importance of transparency and accountability in measuring progress towards our targets. We look forward to updating our ongoing efforts each year as part of our broader commitment to driving positive outcomes for the communities to which we belong.

What we are reporting on and why

We have assessed our efforts and their societal impact to pinpoint key focus areas. We have found several factors that are important to us as a law firm:

  • Through our pro bono work, we are able to help disadvantaged people and NGOs with legal issues, promoting justice and human rights.
  • Our lawyers our bound by professional standards and obligations to the courts. We are committed to ethical behaviours and good governance, led by our leadership team.
  • There is enormous strength in diversity in our workforce.  The unique backgrounds and life experiences our people bring, and our inclusive, supportive and collaborative culture, allow us to perform at our best and deliver great outcomes.
  • We want a safe, respectful workplace in which all of our people play a part. We encourage open communication.
  • We are working towards halving our gross GHG emissions by FY30, relative to an FY19 baseline, to contribute to the global challenge of reaching net zero emissions by 2050.
  • Our sourcing program promotes ethical, environmentally-friendly procurement.

We report on these areas under the categories of environment, social, and governance (ESG), guided by UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Global Compact.

The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals

The SDGs are a call to action to 'develop innovative solutions to some of the world's most complex societal and environmental challenges'. More information about the SDGs can be found on the United Nations website. The actions of businesses are crucial to reaching these goals and we recognise that we have a role to play.

The SDGs are interconnected – progress on one goal can have a significant impact on progress in meeting others. To monitor our contribution, throughout the report we have mapped our activity and initiatives back to the SDGs we believe to be relevant to Allens.

The United Nations Global Compact

The United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) – to which Allens has been a signatory since its creation in 2001 – is also closely linked to the SDGs. It serves as a voluntary initiative to encourage businesses and organisations to adopt sustainable and socially responsible practices across the areas of human rights, labour, environment and anti-corruption.
