About Carly Donovan

Carly specialises in both corporate insolvency and restructuring and commercial disputes.

She advises insolvency practitioners, creditors and other stakeholders in connection with distressed situations, including formal insolvency processes (such as receiverships, administrations, deeds of company arrangement and liquidations) and restructurings and workouts.

She also advises a range of clients in relation to commercial disputes across a variety of industries, including financial and professional services.

Clients benefit from Carly's deep technical expertise, practical advice and strategic mindset. Her expertise and commercial outlook are strengthened by her time spent on secondment at one of Australia's biggest four banks.

Carly holds an Advanced Certification from ARITA (the Australian Restructuring Insolvency & Turnaround Association), the peak professional body for insolvency experts in Australia, and has received independent recognition from Doyle's Guide as a 'Rising Star' in the area of Commercial Litigation & Insolvency.

Her relevant experience includes:

  • Steller receivership: acting for OCP Asia and McGrathNicol in relation to the receivership of the Steller Group of companies—a collapsed Melbourne-based property development and construction group, including in litigation arising from the collapse.
  • Royal Express receivership: acting for Deloitte in its capacity as receivers and managers of the freight forwarding business, Royal Express, which included conducting public examinations and ongoing proceedings in the Federal Court of Australia.
  • CuDeco class action: acting for KPMG in relation to a class action brought by shareholders of collapsed mining entity, CuDeco Limited.
  • Gunns litigation: acting for KPMG in relation to litigation arising from the collapse of forestry giant, Gunns Limited, including public examinations, unfair preference proceedings, liquidator recovery proceedings and a class action commenced on behalf of investors.
  • Sunshine Private receivership: advising Ernst & Young as receivers and managers appointed to Sunshine Private, a private hospital in Victoria.
  • Western Hospital administration: advising Ernst & Young in its capacity as voluntary administrators of Western Hospital Pty Ltd, which operates a private acute surgical and medical hospital in South Australia.
  • Tristar administration: acting for McGrathNicol in its capacity as administrators of the Tristar Medial Group, which operated a group of over 20 medical clinics across Australia.
  • Australian Careers Network administration: advising KPMG as the administrators and subsequent deed administrators of the Australian Careers Network Group, a collapsed group of vocational education providers, involving advice in relation to a range of stakeholders and the defence of proceedings brought by the ACCC and the Federal Government.
