About Gavin Smith
Gavin is the Practice Leader of Allens' Technology, Media and Telecommunications practice.
His practice focuses on all aspects of the technology, media, telecommunications and data markets. He specialises in large-scale technology procurements, business process and technology outsourcing and offshoring deals and corporate transactions in the technology, telecommunications and new media sectors.
Gavin also advises on major sports broadcast rights deals and commercial and regulatory telecommunications matters.
Gavin is one of the leading practitioners in the Australian data industry, advising on all elements of the data life cycle including on data commercialisation strategies and on data governance programs. He also advises on cyber issues, including on companies' responses to data security breaches. Gavin is a founding board member of Data Governance Australia.
Gavin is a leading fintech and growth company advisor, having advised many startups and high growth companies on capital raisings and legal strategies for growth. Gavin was the original founder of Allens Accelerate – the Allens practice dedicated to advising startups, investors, and corporates and government agencies responding to disruption and investing in innovation.
His clients include Vodafone Hutchison Australia, Fox Sports Australia, News Limited, NBN Co, NSW Government, Equifax, Westpac, Hastings Funds Management, Australian Registry Holdings, Data Republic, Medical Director, ASX and Google.
Prior to Gavin's time at Allens he worked at both Linklaters and Clifford Chance in London.
Gavin has been recognised by Chambers Asia-Pacific 2018 as a leading Australian TMT lawyer.
He has a Masters with Honours in Modern History from St. Andrews University, Scotland. Gavin is admitted to practice both in New South Wales and in England and Wales.
