My father was a doctor practising in various places in PNG and I grew up feeling an expectation that I might follow in his footsteps. While the sciences really interested me through high school, my (argumentative) personality drew me towards debating and ultimately a decision to study law and pursue a career in litigation.
After graduating, I took an in-house position with one of the banks, which taught me a lot about working with external legal advisers and also introduced me to Allens. A couple of years in I had the opportunity to work alongside an Allens lawyer who had been seconded there, which ultimately led to me securing a position at the firm many years later.
Legal practice in PNG can be somewhat insular. Joining Allens lifted my gaze and exposed me to people, clients, work and ideas that have made me a better lawyer and enriched my career. Combining our deep insight into local legal practice with the breadth and diversity of our experiences across the wider firm is a winning formula for the clients who entrust us with their problems. And it's terrific seeing the positive impact that collaboration with colleagues on complex matters across our global network continues to have on our up and coming PNG lawyers.
In the early years of my career, the big wins – and the little ones along the way – were what kept me going. These days, I get tremendous satisfaction from seeing others win, especially our younger lawyers. I love seeing those I've taught and mentored grow and develop into great lawyers, and achieve success for their clients and in their careers.
