This is Allens

Natasha Burns

Natasha is a partner in Allens' Intellectual Property (IP) practice, specialising in trademark law.

My career began right here at Allens, when I was fresh out of law school. As I navigated my early career decisions, trademarks weren't on my radar. Initially drawn to finance, it was a twist of fate that led me to discover my passion for IP law. Since then, I've immersed myself in the world of trademarks; I love the international aspect and find fulfilment in helping clients protect their most valuable assets.

I spent several years in New York, where I finetuned my skills, managing trademark portfolios for global giants like General Motors. It was an intense and gratifying experience both personally and professionally – it's where I met my now husband and had my two children, and I worked in a dynamic and fast-paced environment.

When we made the decision to return to Australia, starting my own IP practice felt like the perfect next move. For the next 12 years, I hustled, handling everything from patents to copyrights, and built some great client relationships. But with a small practice, there's a limit to how much you can do for clients.

When IP practice leader Miriam Stiel got in touch, she said 'Allens has changed a lot since you were here – come and see for yourself.' I'm so glad I did.

What I'm able to offer my clients now is a focused, technology-driven trademark practice that can capitalise on experts across the firm – from tax, transactions, litigation and more – that have a deep understanding of the client's business, their commercial drivers and what's important. There's great value in that connectivity.

In my 25-year career, I've witnessed a lot of change. Technology has transformed the way we work with clients in trademarks, but there have also been some seismic cultural shifts, especially for women. Now is a terrific time for women in law. We have more role models than ever, and more examples of the different ways you can build a career that works for you. Allens offers such a supportive environment for everyone to explore their potential and carve their own path – I can attest to that.
