This is Allens

I've always been curious and open to exploring different career paths. When I chose to study law I didn't think I'd become a corporate lawyer – journalism and criminal law appealed to me. It wasn't long into my degree that I realised I really enjoyed learning about the law.

When I started a clerkship at Allens, I wanted to expose myself to some areas of law I didn't know much about so I chose tax for one of my rotations. I loved the complex problems I encountered there and went on to study some tax subjects in my final year of university as a result. 

Almost 14 years on, I'm still captivated by the complexity of tax law. To come up with a solution that clients will accept and adopt requires you to really centre their commercial context and speak in their language. There's an elegance and simplicity to recommending a solution that both solves the technical problem but also helps my client achieve the commercial outcome they're after that never gets old. And when those clients keep coming back to you for advice, the trust and understanding you can create really just adds to the magic.

I've been very fortunate to have had some great mentors and sponsors over the course of my career with Allens. Their patience, time, kindness and attention have been instrumental in honing my technical skills and fostering a client service mentality.  As I step into the partnership, providing that kind of experience to the lawyers I work with is a real priority. My focus has shifted from developing my own skills to their experience – where they want to go and how I can support them to get there.

Seeing my clients and team succeed and thrive is the best motivation – it's why I do what I do.
