As a child, I was always encouraged to have a view on any topic. Best book? Any Tintin adventure. Favourite ice cream flavour? Pistachio. Favourite cricketer? RIP Warnie. I was also encouraged to be prepared to justify these views with good arguments, so you might say it was always likely that I would end up in the law. The university me would be shocked to discover that I eventually became a banking and finance lawyer. Back then I was much more interested in human rights, international law and scientific research. I still am, but two key experiences changed my focus.
First, as a summer clerk at Allens I landed unexpectedly in the banking and finance group where I was exposed to the thrill of commercial dealmaking combined with the challenge of an intellectually rigorous approach to the legal principles. It was, and still is, the perfect combination for me.
Second, my study break in the UK and US, which Allens supported, exposed me to the harsh realities of the Global Financial Crisis. I saw the real world impact the financial system has on our everyday lives. I studied the impact of corporate culture on the financial system and the importance of trusted advisors in helping to create that culture. That resonated with my experience at Allens where I saw senior lawyers playing that exact role, gently guiding clients towards long-term strategies.
I work with a group of amazing people, and I really do mean amazing. They are great at what they do, care for each other, and are deeply committed to helping all our clients, from the largest corporates to the homeless and disenfranchised. I am very happy and proud to be a part of this team.
